Graduated approach to SEND
The first step to supporting children or young people who have, or may have, special educational needs is high quality teaching which is differentiated for individual pupils. What is an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and how does an Educational, Health and Care needs assessment work? Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCP) must be reviewed annually. The SEND Code of Practice 2014 sets out the expectations of how the annual review process must take place. This includes a timeline, who should be involved and what the review must include. For children / young people moving on to a different phase of education, with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) already finalised, their EHCP must be reviewed and amended at the Annual Review. This is called the ‘Phase Transfer’ process. Bolton’s ADHD diagnostic pathway is for children and young people registered with a Bolton GP from aged 5, up until a young person’s 18th birthday. Autism describes the differences in social communication and social interaction, along with repetitive and restricted behaviours. Identity-first language (i.e., “autistic people” rather than “people with autism”) is used throughout this page as this is in line with a range of Greater Manchester autism standards and strategies.
