Bolton residents have just days left to share their ideas for making our streets safer for cycling and walking during the coronavirus lockdown and beyond.

The deadline for submitting a response to the #SafeStreetsSaveLives campaign is this Friday (May 29).

The scheme aims to make it easier to observe social distancing on public streets, especially as more people are choosing to walk or cycle.

Residents are urged to use the online tool to identify specific sites where social distancing is proving difficult.

Once priority spots have been identified, improvement measures will be put on place using £5m of funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s Mayor’s Challenge fund.

Potential measures include footway extensions, one-way streets, removing through traffic on certain roads, adding extra cycle lanes and removing street “clutter” like pedestrian guard rails.

Nationally, the Government has announced a £250m active travel scheme, and feedback from the #SafeStreetsSaveLives campaign will help inform how money allocated to Greater Manchester is spent.

Nobody knows the streets of Bolton better than the people who use them every day.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr Stuart Haslam, said:

“Nobody knows the streets of Bolton better than the people who use them every day.

“That’s why we need your help to identify the places where social distancing is proving the most difficult for those traveling on foot or by bike.

“It’s likely that social distancing measures will be in place for some time, and as people look for alternatives to public transport it is vital we do what we can to improve the road network.

“With your help we can make sure this funding is put to the best possible use on streets across the borough.”
