Road closures and restrictions

Only the police or the local highway authority (the Council) have the authority to close or restrict traffic movement on a road.
A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order or Notice (TTRO or TTRN) is a legal document we can grant to give such permission.

We can issue a TTRO or TTRN for:

• roadworks
• large deliveries or cranes on the road
• tv or movie filming
• special events on the road (eg parades, festivals, races, street parties). A government guide gives more details.

A TTRO is applicable for planned works on the highway which are planned to take longer than five consecutive days or any works on a major road.

A TTRN can be issued for works of a minor nature on minor roads. The maximum duration of this notice is five days.
