Bolton Council is getting to grips with road maintenance after welcoming major additional funding from the Mayor of Greater Manchester.
Bolton is set to receive over £6.5m, meaning that together with its own funding the council now has a war chest of around £10m to spend on improvements right across the borough.
Over 40 hotspots will be targeted for repair by spring of next year.
The idea is to tackle roads where surfaces are in poor condition, as well as resurface roads and pavements to prevent them from deteriorating in the first place.
Damaged roads are a common gripe for residents and can be dangerous for road users of all kinds - not only car drivers, but also buses, trams, cyclists and pedestrians.
Cold and wet winters, more traffic and heavier vehicles are just some of the factors making roads worse.
Repair work will be coordinated through the council’s Highways Capital Programme, which was approved in August, and carried out by contactors.
It comes as Bolton is benefiting from the fourth highest funding allocation in the ten Greater Manchester authorities after new GM Mayor, Bev Craig, announced a £60m road maintenance fund as one of her first big priorities.
The fund is estimated to be enough to repair and maintain over a million square metres – or around 125 kilometres – of road.
Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Highways, Transport and Planning, Cllr Nadeem Ayub, said:
“This funding is very welcome and will allow us to bring forward work on the roads on our priority list.
“We are taking a sensible, planned approach to making our roads better over the long term and I’m confident that residents will start to see improvements soon.”
