Bolton Council is asking anyone who lives, shops, works or travels through Farnworth for their views on proposed changes to the junction of Market Street and King Street.

Newly updated plans for the junction should improve traffic flow and be safer for pedestrians, children and people on bikes.

They are part of ongoing plans to make Farnworth town centre safer and more appealing.

Overall improvements include wider and resurfaced footways, eight new pedestrian crossings, more trees and green spaces, new benches and seating, segregated cycle lanes, reduced highway widths and 20mph speed limits, plus cycle stands and litter bins.

The updated design for Market Street and King Street includes crossings on all arms of the junction, in accordance with the latest design standards.

It means that pedestrians and cyclists would be completely separated from traffic at the junction, improving safety by reducing the possibility of collisions or conflict.

Pedestrians and cyclists should also be able to get through the junction more quickly, with more space to wait than in the previous design.

The updates also mean traffic lights would be greener for longer, helping to improve traffic flow for cars and vehicles.

However, because the new plans are slightly different to what the council previously consulted on in 2023, it is asking people for their feedback on them.

In the original plans to update junction, pedestrians and cyclists could not cross the junction at the same time, meaning two phases of green lights would be needed.

Modelling showed that this meant traffic lights spending less time on green, slowing journeys for motorists, buses and vehicles.

Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Environment Regulatory Services and Highways and Transport, Cllr Hamid Khurram, said:

“Our work at Farnworth town centre aims to provide better footways, new pedestrian crossings, safer cycle routes and more trees and green spaces.

“We expect that through-traffic will shift onto the A666 bypass around Farnworth, making Market Street safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and improving people’s experiences of the town centre.”

The first phase of improvements was recently completed and the second phase – including the changes to the junction at Market Street and King Street – is due to be completed by April 2026.
