Bolton residents are asked to be vigilant after a spate of grid thefts from streets across the borough.

Farnworth is the latest area to be affected with 34 metal gully tops taken in just the last few days.

A total of 24 were stolen from back streets surrounding Plodder Lane, seven taken from Black Thorne Street and three removed from Cawdor Street.

All missing gully covers, which cost approximately £200 each, have since been replaced by Bolton Council’s Streetcare team.

Residents have been asked to keep an eye out for anyone acting suspiciously and pass any relevant information to the council or the police.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr Stuart Haslam, said:

“These thefts have cost Bolton council tax payers a significant amount of money and put residents at serious risk.

“If someone were to trip on an uncovered gully it could lead to serious injury.

“If you have any information about who is responsible for the thefts, or any details which may help the investigation, please contact the council or the police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Greater Manchester Police on 101 or Bolton Council’s Streetcare team on 01204 336600 or report it online.
