Giving up your allotment
If you decide that you no longer wish to retain your allotment, you must notify the Council as soon as possible. You are not permitted to pass your plot to another person.
Until your tenancy has been formally ended, you remain fully responsible for the plot and all associated obligations. A final inspection may be carried out to ensure that the plot is returned in a reasonable and satisfactory condition.
When surrendering your plot, you will be required to:

Leave the plot in a tidy and reasonably cultivated condition.

Remove all structures, materials and personal belongings by the agreed date.

Return all site key(s).
If a plot is left in an unacceptable condition, the Council will undertake any necessary works to restore it (including the removal of debris or structures). Any costs incurred will be recovered from you in accordance with the terms of your Tenancy Agreement.
Transferring plots
All allotment plots are allocated solely by the Council. You must not give, transfer, bequeath or sub-let your plot to any other person, including family members.
As all sites operate waiting lists, any plot that becomes available must be reallocated to the next eligible applicant.
If you are struggling to manage your plot
If you are finding your plot difficult to manage, you should contact the Council at the earliest opportunity.
Depending on circumstances, we may be able to:

Consider reducing the size of your plot, where feasible.

Allow a reasonable period of time to address temporary difficulties, such as ill health, bereavement or other significant life events.

Grant permission for a friend or family member to assist with cultivation on a temporary basis.
If you are a member of an allotment association, they may also be able to offer practical advice or support.
It is important that you inform us of any difficulties. Failure to do so may result in a breach of your tenancy agreement and could ultimately lead to termination. While reasonable discretion will be applied in cases of genuine hardship, the Council reserves the right to take action where a plot becomes substantially overgrown or neglected for an extended period.
You must respond promptly to any enforcement correspondence. Failure to comply following a re-inspection may result in termination of the tenancy. If there are mitigating circumstances, such as a medical condition, you must inform us without delay.
