Your tenancy agreement

To commence your allotment tenancy, you must read, complete and sign a Tenancy Agreement. This is a formal legal contract between you and the Council.

You will be provided with a copy of the current allotment rules prior to signing your Agreement, and you must agree to comply with them at all times.

Once the Council has received your signed Agreement, an invoice will be issued and arrangements made for you to collect a key for the site.

You must not enter any allotment site or occupy a plot until the Council is in receipt of a completed signed Tenancy Agreement.

Your Key Responsibilities

As a tenant, you are required to:

  • Pay your annual invoice within 30 days of the date of issue.

  • Cultivate at least 25% of your plot within the first three months, and the entire plot within 12 months.

  • Maintain the boundaries and pathways surrounding your plot.

  • Keep the plot free from excessive weeds, rubbish and unused materials.

  • Store any items brought onto the allotment in a tidy and orderly manner.

  • Obtain written permission before erecting a shed, greenhouse or polytunnel, or before planting fruit trees.

  • Obtain permission to keep hens or bees and comply fully with the relevant guidelines.

  • Treat others with respect and conduct yourself appropriately while on site.

You will remain liable for all rent and associated charges until you formally notify the Council that you wish to terminate your tenancy.

The Council will carry out regular inspections of plots to ensure compliance with the tenancy conditions. Further information about inspections and the enforcement process is available separately.

Please contact us immediately should you no longer wish to retain your plot or if you are experiencing difficulty managing it.
