Graffiti
Graffiti can be considered a criminal offence.
Racist, sexist or homophobic graffiti is what we class as offensive graffiti.
Offensive graffiti can also be considered a hate crime and should also be reported to the police, as well as the council. If you are a victim of graffiti or witness it being done, please also report it to the police.
What we do:
- We aim to remove / cover offensive graffiti on council land / property within 1 working day of receiving the report.
- We will remove / cover non-offensive graffiti on council land / property as soon as resources allow.
- We aim to block out (with paint) offensive graffiti on private land / property within 1 working day of receiving the report, but we will attempt to contact the resident / land owner before the work is carried out.
However, each land / property owner is responsible for the damage reinstatement, which means that they would be responsible for fully removing the graffiti or repainting if they wanted it removed off their land / property, as we only block out the offensive parts.
- We can’t remove, cover or investigate non-offensive graffiti on private land / property.
- We are not responsible for removing graffiti from any properties or land belonging to Bolton at Home and any other Housing Associations. Please report graffiti in these areas directly to Bolton at home or the relevant Housing Association.
- Please note: Our main aim is to remove / cover the offensive parts of the graffiti.
How to report it
Fly posting
Fly posting is an illegal activity and can be considered a criminal offence.
It is the act of putting up posters or signs on surfaces, usually without the owner’s permission. It can consist of posters and stickers.
It creates a negative impression of an area and contributes to street litter.
Any political agendas being fly posted is what we class as urgent.
Fly posting adverts is what we class as non-urgent.
What we do:
- We aim to remove urgent fly posting within 1 working day of receiving the report.
- We aim to remove non-urgent fly posting as soon as resources allow, after an assessment has been carried out.
- In certain instances, we can take further action against companies or individuals who are responsible for fly posting.
- We are not responsible for removing fly posting from any properties or land belonging to Bolton at Home and any other Housing Associations. Please report fly posting in these areas directly to Bolton at home or the relevant Housing Association.
