Bolton Council aims to improve roads and ease congestion around Horwich and Westhoughton with a bid for up to £50m as part of round two of the Levelling Up Fund.

The council has worked with Bolton West MP Chris Green to bring forward the proposal which would improve connectivity in this key part of the borough.

The project would improve traffic capacity at the Beehive Roundabout, the Spirit of Sport Roundabout, the A6 De Havilland Way Roundabout and at Junction 6 of the M61.

The area suffers from significant congestion at peak times and the proposals aim to address this issue and to meet the area’s future needs.

Pedestrian and cycling facilities would also be improved in line with national guidance, delivering a network that works for all road users.

The majority of Levelling Up Fund bids are for £20m or less, but councils can make the case for up to £50m for transport infrastructure projects.

Bolton Council Leader, Cllr Martyn Cox, said:

“This is a transformational bid that will improve the traffic flow around Horwich, Westhoughton and the surrounding area.

“I know full well the frustrations that drivers have with traffic issues in this part of the borough, and this bid is a direct result of our listening to the concerns and priorities of our residents.

“A road scheme of this kind allows us to bid for the maximum Levelling Up amount of up to £50m, ensuring the largest potential benefit for people in Horwich and Westhoughton.”

Chris Green MP said: “Since I was first elected, I have been campaigning for improved transport infrastructure for my constituents.

“I am pleased that Bolton Council are putting in a bid for £50m of transport investment for my constituents, this will reduce congestion whilst protecting our green spaces.”
