We aim to make our library buildings, services and facilities accessible to everyone in the community, paying special attention to the needs of people who have visual, hearing or mobility impairments and to people with learning difficulties.
We regularly consult with users so that different needs are considered, particularly when we are planning new projects or library layouts.
Access to buildings
We aim to ensure that all our library buildings are easily accessible. When we refurbish specific sites we improve accessibility with features such as:
- ramps
- easily accessible shelving
- well designed and sited seating and tables
- counters of varying heights
- induction loops for people with a hearing loss
- equipment and aids for people with sensory impairments
- children's ear defenders are available to borrow in all our Library and Museum spaces
- Central Library has accessible unisex public toilets on every floor
- Central Library has a Changing Place located on the ground floor at the rear of the library
All of the equipment and aids listed below are available for use, or where appropriate for free loan at all our library sites.
- all computers have features which enable people with additional needs to use them
- large Print books in Fiction and Non Fiction
- talking books on CD
- picture books for shared reading
- books and leaflets on disability issues
Home Library Service
We have a Home Library Service which provides books to people who, through age or disability, have difficulty accessing their local library. Trained staff and volunteers deliver and return items to customers on a fortnightly basis.
Residential and nursing homes
Free bulk loans of books for homes can be supplied on application to any library.
