Council tax bands
Council tax is a tax set by us to meet our budget requirements. It helps pay for the services provided to Bolton residents.
Properties are placed into one of eight bands (A-H) depending on what their market value was on 1 April 1991.
The HM Revenue and Customs Valuation Office (VO) is responsible for deciding the band for each property and the band will determine how much you have to pay.
House values as at 1 April 1991
| Band | Valuation on 1 April 1991 |
|---|---|
| A | up to £40,000 |
| B | over £40,000 up to £52,000 |
| C | over £52,000 up to £68,000 |
| D | over £68,000 up to £88,000 |
| E | over £88,000 up to £120,000 |
| F | over £120,000 up to £160,000 |
| G | over £160,000 up to £320,000 |
| H | over £320,000 |
How to challenge your band
You can ask the Valuation Office to check your band if you think your home was valued incorrectly. This is a free service.
