When and where to register a death
Coronavirus (COVID-19) update
Due to the current coronavirus crisis, registrations of births or deaths in Bolton will no longer take place in person.
If you need to register a death, please call 01204 331185 to book a telephone appointment. You can no longer book an appointment online. Please do not visit the town hall in person until further notice.
The document to allow the funeral to proceed once issued, will now be sent electronically to funeral directors. Copies of death certificates can be ordered at a cost of £11 each at the time of your telephone appointment.
You need to make an appointment to register a death within 5 working days unless a coroner is investigating the circumstances of the death.
You can go to any register office but if you use the one in the area where the person died you’ll be given the documents you’ll need on the day.
If you use a different register office the documents will be sent to the office in the area where the person died before they’re issued to you. This means you’ll usually wait a few days.
If you want to register a death with us it is done at Bolton Town Hall by appointment.
