The 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day) takes place on Friday 8 May and Cllr David Greenhalgh has encouraged people to help turn the borough red, white and blue.

Bolton town hallHe said: "We may be in lockdown, but we are a proud and patriotic nation, so let’s mark this great day by turning our borough red, white and blue.

“We are less than a fortnight away from marking this anniversary, when a generation before us finally overcame a massive threat.

"Our generation are in the middle of a very different battle, but let this not prevent us marking this great celebration in our country’s history.

“Pubs may not be open but I know they would have lead the way in decorating their frontages. So I call on landlords, businesses and each and every resident, let’s  get what bunting we have out, let’s dress up, and let’s fly our Union Flag.

“It may not be the kind of celebrations we expected a few months ago. We must stay at home. We can have the street parties and the party in the parks later, when we’re through this, but to mark the day, let’s celebrate with a sea of red, white and blue across Bolton to show the pride we have in community and in country.

“Come on Bolton! We can do this!”
