Residents affected by the fire at the Cube student accommodation are receiving support thanks to generous donations from across the community.

The Cube Fire Relief Fund was set up by the Greater Manchester Disaster Relief Fund (GMDRF) and managed by Forever Manchester.

It was set up with donations from the public and a contribution from the Greater Manchester Relief Fund.

The £40,000 donation from GMDRF has been divided equally between the Cube residents and residents of surrounding buildings who were forced to leave their nearby homes.

A further £11,027 was made by donations from the public for the residents at the Cube.

The fund received 190 applications from residents at the two student buildings at The Cube and the four surrounding buildings (The Arches, The Picture House, Anvil, Sun Alliance).

A board of trustees, with representatives from Bolton Council and the University of Bolton, administered the allocations to ensure funds were distributed fairly

Those residents directly affected from the surrounding buildings will receive an amount based on how many nights they spent away from their home and any other hardships that they faced..

The amounts paid to residents of the Cube are based on the impact and hardship that they faced.

The money will be paid directly into their bank accounts.

Councillor David Greenhalgh, the Leader of Bolton Council said: “Bolton really came together following the fire and we’ve seen the best of our town over the last month.

“The fire severely impacted the lives of some of our residents. We know how difficult and stressful the incident has been and we hope this fund will go some of the way to helping those most affected.”

President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, Professor George E Holmes DL, said: “As well as the support, both financially and emotionally, provided by the university, it was heart warming to see such a fantastic response from so many individuals, businesses and organisations.

“Our students can feel comfort knowing that such a large number of people contributed to the fund. I would like to thank everyone who was kind enough to donate.”

Letters and emails have been sent to the residents telling them how much they will receive.
