Furniture and white goods collected from households will go to help people on low incomes, after a Bolton based charity was reappointed by Bolton Council.
Bolton Community Furniture Store has been helping people find low priced furniture and white goods for over 35 years and has a well-established partnership with the council.
The charity will collect bulky items like furniture and white goods on behalf of the council and any that are in good condition will be made available to people in need at the charity’s store on Lecturers Close.
It sells a full range of furniture like tables, sofas, chairs, beds and wardrobes, along with white goods like cookers, washing machines and dryers.
Electrical goods are checked and if necessary repaired and refurbished to current UK standards.
Prices are kept to a minimum and the charity offers discounts for people on low incomes.
Collections of bulky waste items cost £40 for up to five items and £80 for a maximum of ten items and can be scheduled by calling the council’s contact centre.
Bolton residents who receive council tax benefits are eligible for one free collection per year for as long as funding is available.
Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change and Environment, Cllr Richard Silvester, said:
“The decision to continue working with Bolton Community Furniture Store cements a very successful relationship that is a win-win for local people.
“It’s important that bulky items are collected so that they are not littering our streets and unsightly.
“At the same time, the people of Bolton will be pleased to know that their unwanted items will, wherever possible, be given a second lease of life to help people who need them.”
Cuma Guzel, operations manager at Bolton Community Furniture Store, said:
“We are delighted to have been awarded this contract.
“It will enable us to maintain our strong relationship with the local authority and continue our commitment to protecting the environment by reducing waste that would otherwise go to landfills.”
