Keeping our allotments safe

  • Children and visitors are permitted on site in the presance of a tenant.  Tenants are responsible for ensuring they remain on their allocated plot for their own safety and out of consideration for others.
  • Dogs must be kept under proper control at all times and must not stray onto other plots without the express permission of the plot holder. Any dog fouling, whether on or off the plot, must be cleared up immediately by the owner and removed from the site for appropriate disposal.

  • Waste must not be brought onto the allotment site from external sources or left on site.

  • Fires of any description are strictly prohibited on allotment sites.

  • The carrying of weapons on site is not permitted under any circumstances.

Vandalism, theft and damage

If you believe that a theft or other criminal offence has occurred on the allotment site, you should report the matter to the Police by calling the non emergency number 101. While it may sometimes feel that reporting such incidents makes little difference, doing so assists the Police in monitoring patterns of crime and taking appropriate action in the area.

In addition to contacting the Police, please inform us so that we can consider and implement any necessary measures.

There are a number of practical steps you can take to improve the security of your plot:

  • Ensure that tools and equipment are stored securely and kept out of sight. Where possible, it is advisable to take valuable items home with you.

  • Security mark your property and display clear signage to indicate that items on your plot are marked.

  • Make sure that sheds, greenhouses and any other structures are properly secured.

  • Avoid storing large quantities of flammable liquids or combustible materials in your shed or on your plot, as these may increase the risk of arson.

Anti-social behaviour

Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated on any of our allotment sites. All tenants and authorised users are entitled to attend and cultivate their plots without fear of intimidation, harassment or nuisance.

If you experience anti-social behaviour, whether from another tenant or any other individual on site, this should be reported to The Council.

Further information on anti-social behaviour and how to report it is available separately.

Tenants should also be aware that the Council operates a zero-tolerance approach to any abuse, harassment or threatening behaviour directed towards its staff. All employees have the right to carry out their duties in a safe working environment, free from intimidation or harassment.

Where an investigation into anti-social behaviour or third-party harassment substantiates the allegations, the tenant’s agreement will be terminated.

Fires

Fires cause a number of issues including air pollution, health and safety risks and annoyance to residents in the surrounding area.

We do not allow bonfires or any other kind of burner on allotment sites, we encourage tenants to compost rather than burn or to dispose of materials by using a local reclamation site.

Use of CCTV and audio recording devices

For data protection purposes the installation or use of CCTV cameras, including any other video or image equipment, or audio recording devices on allotment sites is strictly prohibated.

Tenants must not install any form of surveillance or recording equipment on their plot, within sheds or structures, or in communal areas. This includes devices capable of capturing images, video footage, or sound.

We must remind you that Allotment sites are owned by the Council, they are shared community spaces and the privacy of all tenants and visitors must be respected at all times. Any unauthorised surveillance equipment found on site will be removed and may result in further action, including termination of the tenancy.
