Shared facilities

Our allotment rules apply to all tenants and all other users and visitors on our sites.

Paths and boundaries

  • Boundary paths between plots are communal areas and must remain clear at all times. Access must not be obstructed.

  • Paths between plots are the responsibility of the tenant to maintain.

  • The allocated plot number must be displayed prominently and kept clearly visible at all times.

Security, keys and gates

  • At the commencement of your tenancy, you will be issued with a key to access the allotment site.

  • A charge may be applied for the replacement of any lost keys.

  • If the gate or lock becomes damaged, you must notify us as soon as possible. We will arrange for repair or replacement at the earliest opportunity.

  • Locks on allotment sites may only be changed by the Council. Tenants must not alter or replace any locks without prior authorisation.

  • If any site is found to have a lock fitted that has not been issued by the Council, it will be removed and replaced with an approved Council issued lock.

At all allotment sites, you should feel safe and secure while gardening. Bolton Council is currently considering the introduction of a combination lock system. The access code would be changed annually, or more frequently where necessary.

Water supply

Where water is available on site, an water charge will be applied to your annual fee. Water is typically provided through communal standpipes and must be used responsibly, with consideration for other tenants.

Water consumption is monitored at each site and where usage appears excessive, this will be investigated.

We encourage you to construct and use water saving structures to gather rainwater. Most often this will reduce the distance you have to travel on site to collect water for your plot.

  • Only the communal standpipes and taps provided on site, or water you have collected and stored (for example in water butts), may be used. All taps must be fully turned off before leaving your plot.
  • Hosepipes must not be left connected to any standpipe or tap on the allotment site. The use of sprinklers is strictly prohibited.

  • Permanent pipework must not be connected to any tap or mains water supply. Unauthorised connections to the water system are illegal and will result in the immediate termination of the tenancy.

  • Failure to comply with these requirements may place your tenancy at risk of termination.

Leaking tap/pipe

If you discover a water leak, please attempt to turn off the water supply at the mains, where it is safe to do so. The leak should then be reported to us as soon as possible using our contact form, so that arrangements can be made for it to be repaired promptly.

Composting

We encourage all allotment holders to compost green waste generated on their own plot. Composting should be carried out in a controlled and contained manner. Large, unmanaged heaps must be avoided, as they can attract vermin.

Bringing garden waste onto the allotment site from any external source is strictly prohibited and may result in the termination of the tenancy.

The Council does not supply or deliver compost, however where possible on request may deliver bark. Any such materials brought onto site by tenants must not be deposited in communal areas or in a manner that causes obstruction.
