The Mayor of Bolton led by example last night, by confirming a negative COVID test before formally opening a meeting of full council.
In line with the latest guidance, Cllr Thomas took a rapid lateral flow test ahead of the meeting and reminded others to do the same if spending time in crowded and enclosed spaces.
With COVID restrictions lifted, more people are attending the workplace, visiting shops, enjoying large events, or meeting with groups of friends.
Last week Bolton Council launched the COVID’s Still Here campaign, highlighting the simple steps we can all take to protect each other while enjoying these day-to-day activities.
What is a rapid lateral flow test?
One in three people with COVID-19 do not have any symptoms but can still pass the virus on to others, particularly in enclosed spaces or crowded areas.
Everyone is urged to take a rapid test before mixing with others, either socially or for work, to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
Tests are quick and easy to use with the results displayed in just 30 minutes.
Anyone testing positive should protect others by self-isolating and booking a PCR test to confirm the result.
Keep safe this winter
Viruses of all types spread much more easily when the weather is colder, and as more people mix over the festive period there is a risk that COVID rates could rise.
As well as putting vulnerable people at risk and placing pressure on the NHS, higher rates can cause significant disruption by forcing schools or businesses to close.
We can all do our bit by following the simple steps set out in the COVID’s Still Here Campaign:
- Opening windows and keeping rooms well ventilated when meeting indoors
- Washing our hands regularly and using hand sanitiser when we go out
- Taking regular rapid tests, particularly before mixing with others
- Getting fully vaccinated, including the booster dose and have a flu jab
- Wearing a mask in shared spaces and busy areas
The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas, said:
“Before last night’s meeting I took a rapid COVID test, one of the simple steps we can all take as part of our day-to-day routines.
“If you are meeting with colleagues, family or friends then a rapid test is a quick and easy way to make sure you are not spreading the virus to others.
“By following this advice, we can protect the NHS, the Bolton economy and each other this winter.”
