What we can and cannot investigate

We will investigate..

Common breaches of planning that include:

  • the carrying out of work without the required planning permission
  • failure to comply with any condition set by us when planning permission was granted
  • change of use of a building or land without planning permission
  • untidy land or buildings affecting the amenity of the area
  • unauthorised advertisements or signs
  • unauthorised works to a listed building
  • unauthorised work to protected trees (those in a conservation area or protected by a tree preservation order). If your complaint relates to unauthorised work to a protected tree, please see trees and conservation areas

We will not investigate..

  • complaints that fall under another council area, for example, works blocking or taking place in the highway would be the responsibility of the highways authority
  • complaints that would be better dealt with by a different service, for example, noise disturbance would be the responsibility of environmental health.
  • anonymous complaints, unless they relate to criminal activity in connection with listed buildings, tree preservation orders, or trees in conservation areas
