A community collaboration in Bolton has today been announced as the winner of the Tour of Britain’s National Land Art Competition for 2019.
Egerton Park teamed up with Walmsley Primary School to create the winning cyclist installation, one that was shown around the world as part of the race’s live TV coverage.
Their land art exhibit pipped nearest challenger Crossmichael Primary School to the top prize after a month-long public vote.
The winning creation was one of three finalists from the race’s Greater Manchester stage – the first day of the modern Tour of Britain to be held solely in the metropolitan county.
In total eight land art installations were shortlisted as finalists; pupils from nearby Hazel Grove High School in Stockport placed third overall for their creation of a bee – the famed emblem of Manchester for over 150 years.
Mick Bennett, race director for the Tour of Britain, said: “For the second year running it was amazing to see the creativity and ingenuity that schools, community groups and residents put into their land art decorations.
“We were treated to some fascinating creations on all eight days of the 2019 Tour of Britain – believe me, they really add to the spectacle of the race.
“Congratulations to Egerton Park and Walmsley Primary School for taking the well-deserved 2019 title. I’m already looking forward to seeing what land art installations pop up along the route of next year’s Tour!”
By winning the 2019 award, Egerton Park and Walmsley Primary School follow in the footsteps of a group of farmers from South Molton, Devon, who triumphed by taking victory in last year’s inaugural competition.
This year’s event generated a net impact of £20.5m for the British economy and attracted a roadside audience of 1.4 million spectators. Live or delayed TV coverage was available in every single country worldwide.
Earlier this month race organisers announced that they are looking for a new title partner for the Tour of Britain in 2020 onwards following the conclusion of the three-year partnership with OVO Energy.
Further details of next year’s final stage will be announced alongside the full route for the 2020 Tour of Britain at the national launch of the race in the spring.
