Hundreds of cyclists and runners will take part in the Horwich Festival of Racing between June 11 and 16.

HforThe event is organised by a local committee with the support of partners including Bolton Council and Horwich Town Council.

Highlights of the weekend include a junior duathlon and The Barbara Ronson Run, a one-mile fun run in honour of the late president.

And a number of roads will be closed in Horwich to facilitate the event.

From 5.30pm to 10.30pm on Saturday, June 15, the following closures will be in place:-

  • Lee Lane from its junction with Winter Hey Lane to the Crown Roundabout;
  • Chorley New Road between the Crown roundabout and Winter Hey Lane;
  • Jones Street between Lee Lane and Peter Martin Street;
  • Winter Hey Lane, and St John’s St.

From 6am to 6pm on Sunday, June 16, the following roads will be closed:-

  • Chorley New Road between the Crown roundabout and Winter Hey Lane;
  • Lee Lane from its junction with Winter Hey Lane to the Crown Roundabout, and Winter Hey Lane.

Signposted diversions will be in place and marshals will be present to assist affected residents and businesses to use the alternative routes around the town centre.

Businesses on the Pearl Brook industrial estate can access the site from Chorley New Road, and motorists are advised that car parks on St John’s St will also be closed for the weekend.

Chairman of the Festival, Neil Brown, said: “Horwich Festival of Racing is a unique sporting event taking place on the streets of Horwich town centre.

“It is organised by the local community and supported by a range of partners without whom it could not happen.

“We appreciate that it will be more crowded in Horwich over festival weekend, and there will be an impact on journeys around the town centre but we have worked hard with Bolton Council to provide clear alternative routes.”

Deputy Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Martyn Cox, added: “This is a superb community event which also attracts competitors from across the UK.

“We want to make sure the weekend is a success for the town, and a number of roads will be closed to enable the event to go smoothly and safely.

“We would encourage people to plan their travel in advance and we would like to thank everyone for their patience.”
