All eligible homeowners and private tenants in Bolton can now apply for a free Warm Homes: Local Grant, potentially worth up to £30,000 in energy performance and low carbon heating improvements.

The grant is a government funded initiative to help reduce household energy bills and carbon emissions, which is delivered by Greater Manchester Combined Authority in partnership with Bolton Council for local residents.

Those eligible should have an annual household income of £36,000 or less, live in a designated postcode area, or have someone in the household that receives means-tested benefits.

Successful applicants can expect to receive a free home survey, be in control of what agreed work is to be done, and have it arranged on their behalf at no cost.

These home energy improvements include wall, loft and underfloor insulation, air source heat pumps, smart heating controls, and solar panels with battery storage.

Anyone living in rental properties can still apply, but their landlord may need to contribute part of the costs and the properties must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G - if the applicant does not have the certificate, it can be assessed when applying.

Landlords can also benefit as the grant applies to any property with a low EPC rating (D-G), providing up to £30,000 for a first property and £15,000 for second and subsequent ones.

Cllr Sean Fielding, Executive Cabinet Member for Adults and Community Housing at Bolton Council, said:

“Energy prices are one of the biggest household expenses in the UK.

“Upgrading the energy efficiency of your home is one of the best investments you can make, potentially saving you hundreds of pounds each year off your bills.

“The Warm Homes: Local Grant will help people who can benefit the most, and I’d urge everyone who feels they are eligible to check out the free support available.”
