Filmmakers and enthusiasts gathered at The Light Cinema, Market Place Bolton last night to celebrate the launch of the 10th edition of the Bolton International Film Festival.

Bolton film festival 2026The festival runs from Wednesday 30 September to Sunday 4 October 2026, and over the five days will showcase 305 short films, including 39 world premieres, 22 European premieres, and 78 national premieres.

Film submissions are represented from more than 120 countries and as a BAFTA, BIFA and Grierson qualifying short film festival, Bolton International Film Festival really upholds its reputation as a leading spot on the international short film circuit.

Supporting more home-grown talent, the festival will showcase films specifically from the North of England through the Made Up North strand and celebrate some of the important work of local community groups like Creatives Now Youth Strand and education partners through the University of Greater Manchester College Film Competition Showcase.

Bolton International Film Festival has built its reputation by championing filmmakers at the beginning of their careers.

This year's festival will see pitches for two Short Film Funds: the Slick Films Short Film Fund, offering a chance to win £10,000 to bring a project to life, and the Northern Doc Fund, offering two awards of £3,000 to support documentary filmmakers.

Bolton Film Office will be joining the North West Producers Forum in conversation with Kristian Smith (Greater Manchester Production Fund Manager) on Saturday 3 October to discuss the newly announced £10.5m Greater Manchester Production Fund and how the region is positioning itself as the UK's leading screen industry cluster outside London.

Bolton Film Office is also sponsoring the networking event: Networking at KUDOS, on Saturday 3 October, connecting filmmakers and industry professionals.

Cllr Debbie Newall, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Culture, said:

“The film festival is a great example of the different cultural offerings that Bolton has, which all play an important role in Bolton’s visitor economy.

“It is wonderful to see filmmakers from around the world all gathering in Bolton to celebrate their love of film.

“I am very proud of the local groups which showcase here, and this event puts a spotlight on their talent.”

Bolton Film Office Manager, Fiona Fung, said:

“The festival provides an opportunity for local, regional, national, and international enthusiasts to visit Bolton to celebrate a shared love of film and take in other activities and sights Bolton has to offer.

“Entertainment is part of the Bolton DNA, so we’re really excited to sponsor Saturday’s networking event and connect like-minded creatives.

“It’s clear from the local and regional talent, our varied filming locations, and history of filming credits that Bolton plays such an important role in the screen industries.”

Festival Director Adrian Barber said:

“It is an honour to see the festival reach the 10-year milestone, we’re really proud of this achievement.

“The highlight is to see Oscar winners Chris Overton and Rachel Shenton return to the festival with their £10k Slick Films Fund, and the Northern Doc Fund Pitch, helping filmmakers to reach success and giving back.

“It’s also inspiring to see our volunteers entering the industry after being a part of the festival and knowing that you’ve made a difference.”

The festival will show short films of all genres, from animation to sci-fi, comedy to horror, drama to documentary; plus, a special family-friendly screening on Saturday afternoon, providing an opportunity for young film enthusiasts and families to soak in a different cultural offering here in Bolton. This family-friendly screening is free entry without reservation.
