After five months of cookery workshops, the brand-new young chef programme concluded in a presentation by celebrity chef James Martin.
For the first time, Bolton Food and Drink Festival introduced Bolton Young Chef of the Year, a programme for young people aged 11 to 17 years, thanks to proud sponsor Step Places.
Twelve young people embarked on culinary sessions with professional chef, Mike Harrison and chef lecturer Jackie McKnight, where they had the rare opportunity to work in a commercial kitchen and learn many new skills.
The final session took the form of a luxury three course lunch prepared and served by the youngsters, not only experiencing the cookery side of hospitality but a fast-paced service too.
The aim of the programme was to give young people a unique culinary opportunity and provide experiences to spark a passion in the world of cooking.
The young people were invited to James Martin’s cookery demonstration at the festival where they watched the celebrity chef at work before becoming centre stage for a well-deserved presentation and pep talk from James.
After a few words of wisdom, both Tabitha Glenholme and Thomas Parkinson were crowned the winners of Bolton Young Chef of the Year 2026 in their respective age groups.
Following a huge round of applause the group headed backstage for a private meet and greet where everybody received a signed James Martin cookery book and had their photograph taken.

Tabitha Glenholme said:

“Now I know I can go from here with confidence and independence to thrive throughout my cooking journey and I advise other prospering young chefs, to always take every opportunity.”
Thomas Parkinson said:
“This experience has been fantastic and opened up so many opportunities for my future in the culinary industry.
“I would definitely recommend considering taking part even if it's just to develop new skills."
Bolton Food and Drink Festival celebrated its 21st year with over 412,000 visitors and featured celebrity chefs, live entertainment, family activities and artisan markets, drawing visitors from far beyond the borough and reinforcing Bolton's reputation as a destination for major events.
