Bolton Council has put up over 30 new signs around the town centre to help people find their way around and encourage walking, cycling and wheeling.
The 34 circular signs are in key locations like Victoria Square, Bradshawgate, Churchgate, Knowsley Street and outside the railway station, where people are most likely to see them.
They point the way to popular destinations like the Parish church, library and Queens Park, and tell people how long it should take to walk there.
The new signs also highlight the town hall, Bolton Market, Bolton Lads and Girls Club and the university and colleges.
Some signs feature motivational messages aimed at encouraging people to get around the town centre on foot, by bike or on scooters.
The idea is to help people get the health benefits of keeping active, while also reducing traffic congestion by having fewer cars on the road.
It comes after a group of town centre businesses, local councillors and members of the Town Centre East steering group asked the council for better wayfinding signage.
Funding was provided by the Mayor’s Challenge Fund.
The installation of the new signs was marked with an event in Victoria Square on Wednesday giving youngsters a chance to have a go on balance bikes and adults the opportunity to try e-bikes.
Councillor Nadeem Ayub, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Transport and Highways, said:
“Anyone who knows Bolton town centre knows that it is already a very easy, pedestrian-friendly place for people to walk around.
“But we wanted to make it easier for people to get around and find all the main attractions, like the shops, theatres and library.
“The signs are a simple improvement with multiple benefits, helping people get around and stay active while also reducing traffic congestion.”
