Bolton Council has published a list of authorised bonfires and fireworks displays taking place for Bonfire Night, as it urges people to avoid organising or attending unlicensed events.

Seven organised events have already been enjoyed safely by hundreds of people, with five more still set to thrill the crowds.

Events taking place are at Daisy Hill Cricket Club on Saturday, November 1; Bolton School on Sunday, November 2; Westhoughton Cricket Club on Friday, November 7; and Hollywood Sports and Social Club and the Rose and Crown pub, both on Saturday, November 8.

Bolton Council and the police have had to remove several unapproved bonfires in recent years.

Bonfires are only licensed if they meet strict safety standards and unlicensed events can pose a serious fire risk to surrounding buildings, including people’s homes.

Bonfire material must also be stored in line with regulations to minimise the risk of accidental fires.

Unlicensed bonfires can also lead to smoke and noise causing significant disturbances to nearby communities, while grassed areas can be left badly burned and muddy.

Removing bonfires and repairing damaged land can be costly for the council.

Fireworks are also a major safety concern, with people urged to either attend an organised display or, if using fireworks at home, stick carefully to the fireworks code.

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said:

“Bonfire night is a great British tradition and most people enjoy it safely and responsibly.

“But every year we see injuries, unapproved bonfires, hoax calls and anti-social behaviour.

“Please do the safe and sensible thing and enjoy bonfire night at a properly organised and licensed event.”
