Football fans across Bolton are urged to stay safe while they enjoy the final of the European Championships this weekend.

England will play Italy on Sunday at 8pm and millions across the country are expected to watch the game in pubs, fan parks and with friends.

Bolton residents are reminded that we remain at Step 3 of the government’s COVID-19 roadmap, meaning certain precautions are still needed to keep ourselves and others safe.

Anyone heading out for the match should take a home lateral flow device test (LFD) well in advance.

Many people with COVID-19 suffer no symptoms but can still pass the virus on.

In just 30 minutes an LFD test can tell you if you need to stay home to protect others.

Bars and pubs will be operating with table service only, masks should be worn indoors and fans should wash their hands regularly and maintain social distance.

Good ventilation is also vital for stopping the spread of the virus so anyone hosting friends for the game should open windows and let plenty of fresh air in.

Let’s not let it slip now - let’s celebrate this great occasion and remember to keep yourselves and others safe as we cheer England to the win on Sunday.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr David Greenhalgh, said:

“Last night’s semi-final was a great occasion for this country and we are expecting even more people to watch Sunday’s historic final in pubs or with friends.

“As we look forward to July 19 and the expected lifting of COVID restrictions, we must remind ourselves that for now we still remain at Step 3 of the roadmap and need to be careful.

“Bolton knows better than most how challenging COVID-19 can be, but we pulled together as a team to bring the virus under control.

“Let’s not let it slip now - let’s celebrate this great occasion and remember to keep yourselves and others safe as we cheer England to the win on Sunday.”

Fans planning their Sunday night are also urged to drink responsibly and to consider any commitments they may have on Monday morning.

Bolton Council’s Director of Public Health, Dr Helen Lowey said:

“Many people who drink alcohol or take drugs do not realise they could still be over the legal driving limit or otherwise impaired the next morning.

“This is important to remember, especially for those driving to work this Monday or anyone who operates a vehicle or heavy machinery as part of their job.

“We ask everyone to keep this in mind so fans can enjoy the game without putting themselves or others at risk.”

In the town centre, Bradshawgate will be closed from 8pm until two hours after the final whistle as a public safety measure – residents and business have been contacted directly with the details.

Nelson Square will close at 2pm until 11.30pm to allow businesses with pavement café licenses to use the space – this is part of a broader scheme to welcome visitors back to the town centre and will continue every week Thursday to Sunday and on Bank Holidays.
