Bolton will host its first major event in over a year as we welcome Supersapiens IRONMAN UK back to town this weekend.

A number of measures will be in place this year to make sure everyone can safely enjoy watching Sunday’s iconic triathlon.

New for this year will be a big screen in Queens Park so spectators can watch a live stream of the finish line from a socially distanced open space.

The live stream will be shown from 1pm to 8pm.

Street performers will entertain the crowds and there will be a live acoustic music stage in Queens Park.

Those planning to watch the event live are urged to take a home COVID test before attending and anyone testing positive should remain home and follow self-isolation guidelines.

Council officers and community teams will be on hand to provide advice and guidance on COVID safety, and hand sanitising stations will be available.

Regular updates will be available across social media for those who prefer to follow Sunday’s race from home.

A downloadable spectator guide includes maps of the IRONMAN route and everything you need to know to follow the event safely.

This weekend’s events at a glance

  • Night Run (Friday, July 2. 6pm) – A 5k fun run as hundreds of participants complete a course from Le Mans Crescent, through Queens Park and finishing in Victoria Square.
  • IRONMAN UK (Sunday, July 4.) – A gruelling triathlon featuring a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full marathon finishing in Victoria Square.

Some road closures will be in place during the event. Affected residents and businesses have been contact and race marshals will allow emergency access if needed.

A warm welcome back

Bolton Council Leader, Cllr David Greenhalgh, said:

“Bolton has a reputation for hosting world class events and IRONMAN UK is always a firm favourite with residents and businesses.

“This is an exciting step as Bolton opens back up and a key part of our broader plans to safely welcome visitors back into the town centre.

“Bolton is well known for the support and reception we give to the IRONMAN athletes, and while this year will look a little different, I’m sure the warm welcome will be the same.”
