Description

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee is looking for Greater Manchester residents to take part in a public discussion on the risks and opportunities associated with data centres. This will take place on Thursday 26 November in Manchester.

What is a data centre?

Data centres are buildings or rooms that store and process the information used by websites, apps, cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI). The Government considers them a critical part of the UK's digital infrastructure and economy.  As the use of AI and other digital services grows, more data centres may be needed. However, data centres can use large amounts of electricity and water, which raises questions about their impact on the environment.

No prior knowledge of data centres is required to attend this focus session.

Why should I attend?

Greater Manchester Combined Authority is keen to ensure the discussion reflects the diversity of Greater Manchester's communities and would encourage organisations to share this opportunity through their networks. Reasonable travel expenses are available. This event is intended for local residents and members of the public, rather than representatives of organisations or businesses. Selected participants will take part in a facilitated discussion about their views on the opportunities and challenges associated with data centres.
