Thomas Roocroft

Miner - Started work at the Meadow Pit, Haigh, aged 13. He worked there until 1926 and then worked at the Wilderswood Colliery, Horwich.

First elected to Blackrod UDC 1936. Magistrate, appointed 1949

Chairman of the Roads, Farm and Sanitary Committees.

Secretary of the Blackrod Labour Party and a member of the Municipal and General Workers Union.

Manager of Blackrod Council School

Chairman of Blackrod Old People's Welfare Committee. He played a leading part in the foundation of the meals-on-wheels service.

Member of Blackrod Charity Bowling Handicap Committee. He organized the charity bowling handicap in the village.

Secretary of the Blackrod Family Funeral Society

Member of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows.

Died in office during his fourth term as Chairman.

Councillor Joseph Jolley said "It is a tragedy for the whole village. We can ill afford to lose men like him. He lived for the people and fought for their right to live under better conditions. He was a shining example to everyone, whatever their status, of how to make a lasting effort in public life".
