Joseph Gale

Worked at the de Havilland Aircraft Company (Lakefield.)

He was first elected in 1946 as a Labour Councillor, retiring in 1952.

He sought re-election in 1955 as an Independent but was unsuccessful.

He was a member of all the Council Committees and represented Little Lever on the Library Sub-committee and the Divisional Road Safety organization. He was also Secretary of the local National Savings Committee.

Anglican - he worshipped at St Matthew's Church. He was Peoples Warden for 9 years and was a member of the Parochial Church Council. He also served on the Church's Sunday School Committee.

He was interested in education and was a member of St Matthew's Board of Governors and Little Lever Secondary Modern School Governors.

He was well known as a musician playing the violin and saxophone. At that time most people in Little Lever would have danced to the music of Joe Gale's Band or Gale's Trio.

During the Second World War he was a member of Farnworth AFS Concert Party which helped local charities as well as entertaining the troops. He also performed with the musical saw.

His spare time activities included photography and amateur radio. He was a keen cine camera enthusiast and also entertained gatherings with lantern slides of local beauty spots.
