William Tatlock (I)

Publican and butcher. Landlord of the Unicorn Inn, 157 High Street.

Son of Jonathan Tatlock, a clogger in Little Lever.

Father of William Tatlock, Chairman of Little Lever Urban District Council 1931-32, 1936-37, 1941-42.

Served  18 years on the Council and was Chairman of the Streets and Sanitary Committee.

Reporting his death the Farnworth Journal said "he continually urged the need for economy, too often it is to be said at the cost of efficiency. Upon an authority more inclined to institute reforms, his point of view would have been better worth consideration. No-one doubted his desire to serve his fellows but advanced sanitarians often found themselves unable to agree with him, for they would aim at the healthiest conditions even if the rates went up as a consequence. Whenever any advance was made Mr Tatlock was unnecessarily apologetic and would  try to put the responsibility on the Local Government Board, the County Council, or the local officials, to whom he would hint that they need not be too keen in pointing out faults and defects. The regard in which he was personally held was shown in the representative nature of the gathering at his funeral".
