The Mayor of Bolton for 2019-20 is Councillor Hilary Fairclough

Mayor 2019

"I have lived in Astley Bridge for almost all my life only moving to Darwen for two years, at the beginning of my married life, but couldn’t wait to move back to Astley Bridge.  I attended Clarence St nursery aged 2 years, before going to St Pauls church school Newnham St, Astley Bridge, and then to Smithills Secondary school.  On leaving school I trained as a hairdresser at Bolton Technical College and went on to work for various hair salons until the birth of our first child in 1974.  Later I managed a family business before joining my husband Don in running a local post office in Astley Bridge.

I am Chair of the PTA at High Lawn School, and governor at Sharples school for over 30 years, including 6 years as chair, also a magistrate for the past 25 years.  In 2000 I became a Councillor representing Astley Bridge and continue to do so.  As a Councillor I have served on many committees including Health, Environment, Corporate, Culture, Licensing, been Chair of environment Scrutiny, and Chair of Licensing committee.

I have been Married to Don for 46 years and have two children and four lively grandchildren.  My husband Don will be taking on the role of consort supporting me in my Mayoral year.

I am honoured to have been asked to take on this very important role as Bolton’s First Citizen.

Bolton is a wonderful town with a big heart and I shall do everything I can to champion the hard work of our vibrant and caring community.  I am looking forward to meeting groups, charities and individuals from every part of the borough and celebrating their achievements."
