Heritage at risk
Every year Historic England updates the heritage at risk register.
This creates a dynamic picture of the sites most at risk and most in need of safeguarding for the future.
This register identifies sites at risk of being lost due to neglect, decay, or inappropriate development.
Currently there are 9 buildings and 2 conservation areas that are included on the National Heritage at Risk Register for Bolton. These include:
- Hall’ ith’ Wood, Bolton (grade I)
- Swan Lane Mill No. 3, Higher Swan Lane, Bolton (grade II*)
- Holy Trinity Church, Prestolee (grade II)
- St Chad, Tonge Moor (grade II)
- Ukrainian Church, Bolton (grade II)
- St Matthew, Little Lever (grade II)
- St James, Roscow Avenue, Breighmet (grade II)
- St Catherine, Richmond Street, Horwich, Horwich (grade II)
- Bolton Methodist Mission, Knowsley Street, Bolton (grade II)
- Horwich Locomotive Works, Bolton, Horwich (CA and grade II)
- Birley St Conservation Area*
We are assisting owners and incumbents with advice, support and information on grant aid.

Local heritage at risk
There are several buildings that have been identified since the publication of the above list that we consider should be included on the national list.
We plan to undertake a full assessment of all heritage at risk in Bolton in the future.
