Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Who is allowed to drive on a School Street during restricted times?
Access is generally restricted to:
- Local residents with exemption permits
- Emergency services
- Blue badge holders
- School staff (if required for work)
What if I need to drop my child off by car?
You’ll need to park outside the restricted zone and walk the rest of the way. We encourage families to try walking, cycling, or using public transport instead.
What is the process of applying for an exemption?
Exemptions will be managed directly by each participating school. The decision to grant an exemption is at the discretion of the school, typically overseen by the headteacher.
Where a school agrees to provide an exemption, the school will also be responsible for collecting and verifying evidence such as proof of residency and vehicle registrations.
Exemptions will be limited to individuals who have a genuine need to access the road during restricted hours, for example pupils with disabilities who must be dropped off directly at the school entrance.
Residents living within the School Street area would need to apply for an exemption to be able to use their cars during the restricted hours. However, we encourage movements of residents’ vehicles to be kept to a minimum, to contribute to the success of the scheme. If you have visitors, where possible, ask them to avoid arriving or leaving when the restrictions are in force. We also ask that every effort is made to encourage deliveries are made outside of the operating times. Granting exemptions to everyone (for example to all residents) would undermine the purpose of the scheme.
If you live within a School Street zone and require an exemption, you can apply for an exemption permit by contacting the school.
