Have Your Say – Proposed Firwood Special School extension on land adjacent to the Jubilee Centre, Crompton Way   

Bolton Council is inviting comments on a proposal to build an extension to Firwood Special School on land adjacent to the new Jubilee Centre, located on Crompton Way, Bolton, BL2 3AF.

The proposed expansion of Firwood Special School, to provide an additional 100 places, is required in order to meet identified future demand for school places that will be required to meet the needs of Bolton families and their children. 

Despite the recent expansion of Firwood School at its site off Stitch-Mi-Lane, further places are required to meet future demand, but given the severe sloping nature of the land, and the limited amount of external space at that site which is required for pupil sport and recreation, an alternative site needs to be considered to accommodate any further expansion proposals for the school. 

The Jubilee Centre on Crompton Way, which officially opened last year, is managed by Bolton Cares and provides community-based day services for adults with learning disabilities. The proposed construction of an educational facility for Firwood Special School would be delivered by a partnership between the council, the school, and Bolton Cares to ensure the plans work for everyone, and to ensure that any disruption is minimised.

Proposals are at pre-planning stage, and any feedback received now will help to inform any future building design and planning proposals which will be consulted on at a later stage.
