Worked as an animal health inspector until retiring in 1993.

Represented Daisy Hill from 1985 (later switching to Chequerbent) and was a founder member of the town Council.

Unveiled a plaque outside Westhoughton Town Hall to the Westhoughton born actor and writer Robert Shaw in August 1996.

Opened the Westhoughton Exhibition Space - effectively a local history museum and archive - at Westhoughton Library on 10 May 2002.

A popular local historian and after dinner speaker he also lectured on the Pretoria Pit disaster of 1910.

He was heavily involved with the organization and delivery of the commemorative events in Westhoughton marking the centenary of the Pretoria disaster in 2010.

Published books on the Lancashire dialect.

His wife, Annie, was Mayoress.
