President of Westhoughton Central Labour Club for 20 years.

Represented Westhoughton UDC on the Divisional Education Executive, the Borsdane Wood Joint Committee, the Old People's Welfare Committee and the Youth Club Committee.

Chairman of Managers of Fourgates School and School Manager of Chequerbent, Hart Common Parochial and White Horse Primary Schools.

He was a keen footballer who played for his school team, Daisy Hill and Westhoughton Congregational sides.

Anglican.

His wife, Lily, was Chairman's Lady.
