Had a varied early career including work as a dairyman, farmhand and later proprietor of a taxi firm in Westhoughton. Most of his working life was in the employ of the United Co-operative Society in Westhoughton.
Represented East Ward 1957-74.
Elected Chairman of Westhoughton UDC on a majority vote against Labour party opposition.
Chairman of Westhoughton Conservative Association 1957. Later served as chairman of the North West Conservative Association.
Treasurer of Westhoughton Carnival Committee for several years.
