Thomas Sherrington

His first job was in the pit. He then became a pupil teacher at Wingates Independent Methodist School before going on to higher education.

After working in North Wales and Wolverhampton he came back to teach at Wingates before transferring to the new Central School. In 1928 he was appointed headmaster and he retired in 1938.

He was Secretary and twice President of the Bolton and District Teacher's Association, President of the County Association of Teachers, Secretary and President of the Lancashire Federation of Class Teachers, on the Executive of the NUT and on the Burnham Committee.

He was one of the first officials of the local ILP and a pioneer of the Westhoughton Divisional Labour Party.

Represented North Ward from 1930.

He was Chairman of the Library, Higher Education, Town Hall and Finance and General Purposes Committee.

He did not seek re-election in 1937 because he believed that locally Labour's message was in many respects being wrongly interpreted and much that was advocated in Labour's name was not in harmony with Labour's principles and policy.

Shortly afterwards he retired from teaching. He did however, make an attempt to return to public life, unsuccessfully contesting Heaton Ward in Bolton for the Labour Party.

One of his other interests in Westhoughton was the formation of the Unnamed Society (a theatrical group.)

He lived in Markland Hill Lane.
