Known as Bob he was the son of Horwich coal merchant, Frank Yardley.

Represented Central Ward 1962-72.

Chairman of the Staff and Public Health Committees.

Instigator of the Lever Park development - Chairman of the Lever Park Committee.

Instigator of Horwich Leisure Centre and was Chairman of the Council when the building was opened by J S B Boyce, Chief Education Officer for Lancashire, on 29 March 1969.

Founder member Bolton Industrial Development Committee who were involved in the early days of what is now the Middlebrook development.

While Chairman he engaged Humphrey Littleton to perform for the Shrove Tuesday Horwich Civic Ball.

Representative of seven districts on the SELNEC transport executive, the predecessor to Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE).

Member of Bolton Corporation Waterworks Committee. His name is on the plaque at Jumbles Reservoir, marking its inauguration by Alderman Dr John Richard Monks on 11 March 1971.

His wife, Joyce, was Chairman's Lady.
