His first post was as clerk to the staff of the Winter Gardens in Southport (which then included an Opera House, Music Hall, Ballroom, Skating Rink and Aquarium).

In 1914 he was manager of a cinema in Stockport.

He later joined the forces and served in France.

On his discharge he became a Commercial Traveller in Yorkshire.

In 1923 he became Manager of Horwich Picture House, later becoming director of the company and acquired the other two cinemas - Prince's Theatre and The Palace.

He first entered local politics in 1946 but failed twice to become elected before succeeding in 1948.

Represented Central Ward 1948-62.

Chairman of the Allotments Committee.

President of Horwich Musical Society and of Horwich Old Age Pensioners Association.

He moved abruptly to Ipswich in July 1962, sending a letter informing the Council of his departure.
