About

Electrical Engineer and Trade Union Official.

Began work at Horwich Loco Works in 1912.

Served in the Royal Navy during the First World War before returning to the Loco works in 1923 where he remained until his retirement in 1963.

Served on Works Committee for 19 years.

He was Secretary and Treasurer of his AEU branch.

Secretary of the local branch of League of Nations.

During Second World War he was an area captain of the Fire Guard Service with responsibility for Southern part of Horwich.

Member of Horwich Loco Works Ambulance Corps for over 20 years

He was also Savings Group Secretary and formed the prophetically named Victory Savings Group in 1941, which included 100 men.

Represented North Ward 1946-51 and 1952-66.

Magistrate from 1950.

He was awarded the BEM in 1963 for services to Trade Unionism.

Was a member of the Board of Management of the Co-operative Society for 12 years and was a supporter of the local League of Nations branch.

Methodist - he was a staunch member of Victoria Methodist Church, Horwich and was a Circuit Steward and Sunday School Superintendent.
