Steam engine fitter at Horwich Loco Works.

Came to live in Horwich in about 1889.

He was Secretary of the Horwich branch of the Amalgamated Engineering Union until 1946 for an unbroken period of 43 years.

He was also Chairman of the Employees side of the Horwich Loco Works Committee for many years.

During the First World War he earned great respect for his approach to various problems during those difficult times.

Represented North and East Wards 1920-29.

As Chairman of the Hospital Committee he played a big part, together with Alderman Edmund Aspinall, in raising the sum of £10,000, to free Bolton Infirmary from debt.
