Departmental Manager, Robert Fletcher's Papermill, Stoneclough. He was in charge of the preparation and beater room and worked for the firm for 34 years.

During the Second World War he served as one of the firm's qualified volunteer civil defence (industrial) instructors. He was also Treasurer of the firm's social club.

Represented North Ward from 1948 until retiring in 1960.

He was the Council's representative on the Farnworth Youth Employment Committee.
County Magistrate 1960.

He played football, tennis and bowls and as a junior footballer had trials with Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City and Blackpool, playing for one season in the seaside club's "A" team. He also played for Prestolee in the Radcliffe Sunday Schools League and for Fletcher's works team in the Bolton Workshops League.

He played bowls for the firm's social club in the Farnworth Midweek League and Bury and District Paperworkers League.

He was Treasurer of Stoneclough over 60s Club and was a former Chairman of the Prestolee Youth Club.

Anglican - he worshipped at Holy Trinity Church, Prestolee all his life.
