He worked for a Kearsley textile firm for many years as a Manager before purchasing a building in Manchester from them and going into the cotton trading business on his own.

He was an Independent Conservative, serving on the Council from 1933 to 1949.

County Magistrate, appointed 1949. Vice Chairman of Bolton Bench.

Chairman of Kearsley Education Committee and its successor the Divisional Education Committee. Governor of two local schools.

He played football in the Lancashire Combination and Cheshire Leagues and had a trial for Blackburn Rovers when he was 17. He also played cricket for Kearsley and Walkden.

Bowling was another of his interests and he was a member of teams at Kearsley Bowling Club, Kearsley Moor Conservative Club and Kearsley Park Bowling Club. He presented the 'Cranshaw Cup' to the parish for a bowls competition.

Anglican - he worshipped at St Stephen's Church Kearsley, organized the men's class, was a Sunday School Superintendant and teacher, Churchwarden and Secretary of the Parochial Church Council.
