Tom Young Martin

Employed at Topp and Hindley's Mill, Longcauseway, Farnworth all his working life. In July 1957 the firm made him a presentation on completing 70 years service. He started as a Cop Packer, eventually becoming Weaving Manager, Chief Clerk and Cashier with secretarial duties.  His family had a total record of 477 years service. His last 10 years were in a part time capacity.

He served 9 years as a Councillor from 1921. He was Chairman of Kearsley Higher Education Committee.

Chairman of Kearsley Moor Conservative Club.

Manager of St John's, St Stephen's and Kearsley West Council Schools.

He was involved with many clubs and organizations in the town. Among those he served in an official capacity were, Kearsley Horticultural Society, Kearsley Social Club, Kearsley Cricket Club, the local branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Farnworth and District Care Committee for consumptives and Bolton Workshops for the Blind.
Magistrate, appointed 1937.

He was a Special Constable for 25 years, reaching the rank of Section Commander for Kearsley.

Chairman of Stoneclough over 60s club and later involved with the over 60s Sunshine Club.

Bowling was his main pastime and he was Chairman of Kearsley Park and Veteran's Bowling Club as well as being President of the Farnworth and District Parks Veterans Bowling League.

He was the first aid attendant at the mill and works collector for the Bolton Hospital Saturday Fund.

Anglican - he worshipped at Farnworth and Kearsley Parish Church where he was on the Parochial Church Council.

His daughter Ada was Headmistress at Harper Green School and his son, the Rev Tom Martin, was Vicar at St Paul's, Ramsbottom.
