George Kenyon Brown

Husband of Elizabeth Brown, Mayor of Farnworth 1972-73.

Although born in The Orkneys, his seafaring father was a native of Farnworth and the family returned to the town when George was 3 years old.

He began his working life with the Midland Bank in Darwen.

He joined the RAF in 1942 and, after service abroad, was posted to Cornwall in 1945 where he married Elizabeth Casement, a girl he had met in Bolton only a month previously. They went on to have 6 children, adopt another son and foster over 40 other children.

After demobilisation he returned to the bank but then took up employment with the newly created Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance where after 12 months he passed the Civil Service examination, being placed second in the country out of 13,000 candidates. He stayed with the service for over 30 years.

Represented South West Ward.

Chairman of the House Letting Committee.

He inaugurated the town's new telephone STD system making the first call from a telephone installed in the Town Hall Council chamber to the offices of the Amalgamated  Weavers Association in Manchester.

Chairman of Farnworth Labour Party for many years.

Chairman of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and of Farnworth and District Boy Scouts.

Governor of Farnworth Grammar School and St James's Primary School.

Along with his wife, he worked tirelessly for the local community for young people, the elderly and the disabled.
