About

He was a buyer for the Fairway group of companies, Fairway Engineering Co Ltd, Little Hulton and was previously employed by the De Havilland Co at Farnworth and Lostock in the Purchasing Department.

He served in the Royal Navy in the Second World War and was a Lieutenant in the RNR, giving a great deal of public service to the Farnworth and Kearsley Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps.

Represented North West Ward from 1955.

Chairman of the Civil Defence Committee for 6 years and Vice Chairman of the Offices and Markets Committee.

On his election as Mayor, Councillor P Smith said that Councillor Norfield was "A man with deep conviction, good character and genuine sincerity and with a sound social and religious background."

He was on the managing bodies of Plodder Lane, Highfield and Cherry Tree Primary Schools. Member of the Further Education Sub-Committee.

He was Secretary of the Labour Group on Farnworth Council and a member of the Labour Party Executive.

Anglican - he worshipped at St James's Church, New Bury and was a Sidesman and member of the Parochial Church Council, Sunday School Treasurer and Secretary of the committee for the dual purpose church school building in Highfield.

His wife, Sarah, was Mayoress and was previously a member of the Labour League of Youth.

His three brothers were well known for youth work. Eric Norfield was Rover Scout Commissioner for Bolton, Kevan Norfield was Secretary of Farnworth Swimming Club and Keith Norfield was also a former Scout leader.
